The Evolution of a Phenomenon tends to be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Big Idea

An inspiring figure or leaders propose an innovative concept pledging a cure for struggling players.

And so it goes. They’re getting ready to confront the system down in Brisbane. Pressure is mounting. Signs of trouble appear from the out-houses. A lone figure, vulnerable, nervous, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET displayed prominently in chicken blood, has stumbled from the field and is taken aside in secrecy for a temporary assignment elsewhere.

Do you recall the start, when the world was still young? The initial phase, of Bazball without brains.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Team architects promise a fresh beginning, hope for a future, camaraderie, redemption together united in belief in the philosophy.

What did it represent initially? Players celebrating feeling good. Ink. Forearms. Determination. Confident masculinity. Of course, England’s players often say Bazball doesn’t actually exist, which is funny as it’s denied, what exactly did I just watch?

However, everyone understands the concept. It’s the player playing a shot so outrageous it defies description. It’s the thrill of the leader at his peak, a demeanor suggesting: thoughtful warrior, strong features, untamed style, truly contemporary you half-expect to glance over and see him playing at mid-off bare-chested and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the opener often seen speaking publicly, out there looking like a happy little woodland creature in a waistcoat, uttering phrases such as we’re challenging norms. Indeed, the energy, for a significant period, was entirely positive.

3. A New Life

Building period. Cohesion maintained by rote learning of the cult’s slogans. These ideas may seem irrational as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The reaction, the outrage, the sense of betrayal post-defeat feels overblown, overdone. The batting collapsed in Perth, as is typical there. They were torn apart in the field during a brief period when tactics failed, carved around by the opponent imitating their style effectively, adaptive to conditions, a performer excelling with brilliance.

And now we have this the pile-on, the rage, the perception of the team as a disgrace. The feeling seems to be that losing isn’t enough, they need to lose righteously, to be cleansed, flame-throwered, destroyed through sheer skill of the pace attack, the low-fi orthodoxies of Scott Boland, marking achievements humbly similar to getting a rewarding prize. What will this do to them?

4. External Conflict

Problems arise due to setbacks. Yet, mistakes are denied. It starts to feed on hostility externally.

The fact remains, half a week out the upcoming game, we’ve entered a critical juncture in the story of this movement. They might succeed overseas in a blur of adrenal disruption. More likely, failure may follow. Should they fail it appears we really might be entering the final stage.

Prior to that, there are two things worth saying about this. In the past, during the initial excitement, of passion and hope, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. People were very angry, which was helpful as it’s known how to confirm that it’s not a closed group is when its acolytes send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages denying scrutiny of the philosophy.

Recent events in the last few days are fascinating. Criticism of the approach has turned into a movement. Online outrage is widespread, critical analysts, images of frustrated followers overseas cheated out of three days of cricket, like a room full of people wanting fairness.

Meanwhile, we have the wider backdrop of the host’s complex deep-seated frustration at these weirdly passive-aggressive buccaneers, out there saying, the methods you value and have honed as part of your identity from the opposition, it’s not serious ultimately.

And this is the real point. All movements are similar. The style was a trend because cricket is a cult. In fact, English cricket has always been a cult, a circle, a private event, an insular community with a long history of tradition and mystery defining it. This has always been where entry is limited. It’s the imperial sport of England, the original sports washers. And guess what, Britain is itself a cult, a series of esoteric hierarchies, a royal family remains.

England’s cricketers have been enclosed in this system since childhood. Attempting to break free, to build a better atmosphere, they are mirroring their own experience, forming a new circle, an exclusive group, but now with a new team and a mentor who wants you to be yourself if you fit the mold.

Focus on the moment. Confront risks. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
