"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: I also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple famous fans have also coveted the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos repeatedly feature them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"So all are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Milestone

The band are speaking from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major milestone," continues Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project was born from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Music

That recent toughness called for a new sound – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Laughter

The trio's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international audience.

But Haim will forever be their primary commitment.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
